Man Who Loses Leg to Vibrio to Cross Ocean Springs Bridge

An Ocean Springs man who lost his leg two years ago to the vibrio vulnificus bacteria, will beat the odds this weekend.

Joseph Smith will be crossing the Ocean Springs – Biloxi Bridge Saturday morning on his crutches to help raise money for Limbs for Life, an organization that provides prosthetic care to those who can’t afford it. Smith says it makes him happy to give back for others like him.

Smith says, "It’s given me something to work for, so I figured I could make a negative into a positive and do something for somebody. At the same time, I’m helping myself by, you know, getting moving so to speak. After this happened, it was a quite mental thing as well as a physical thing."
