Man found dead in Moss Point yard part of home invasion case, police say

Moss Point Police provided an update to a case that began last week when a resident found a man dead in the backyard of her residence.

Chief Brandon AShley said 18-year-old Jayrell Cox of Moss Point was found in the yard of a home in the 6200 block of Elder FErry Road.

The resident told investigators on Thursday night, he walked out of his house the night of the shooting and saw two armed suspects waiting under his carport. The resident said he went back into the house and the suspects tried to force their way in, exchanging gunfire with him.

The suspects fled on foot through neighboring yards. The resident said he was not aware he had hit anyone during the exchange of gunfire.

On Friday about 11 a.m. officers were called to the area after a neighbor discovered a man in her back yard who had died. Investigators then learned one of the suspects had been shot and fled until he collapsed and died.

The case is being investigated as a home invasion resulting in the suspect’s death. The case will be presented to the Jackson County grand jury.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Detective Vince Nye or Moss Point Police at 228-475-1711 or Crime Stoppers at 877-787-5898.
