Man charged in double murder of children in Coahoma County

A man who recently moved back to Mississippi from Texas is in jail this morning, charged with killing two children and threatening a third.

The Coahoma County Sheriff’s office said 25-year-old Marquez Griffin was charged with 2 counts of murder and 2 counts of aggravated assault. He is in the Coahoma County jail.

About 2 a.m., the sheriff’s office got a call from an apartment complex in Jonestown about a child shot. Jonestown is northeast of Clarksdale in the county.

An off-duty deputy who lives nearby responded, along with those dispatched and found Griffin holding a child at gunpoint.

They were able to talk Griffin into dropping the weapon and get the child to safety.

That’s when they found two other children — a 9-year-old girl and a 1-year-old boy — already shot before they arrived. One was dead at the scene. The other died shortly after at the hospital in Clarksdale.
