Making the best of a wet situation
The streets of a neighborhood in the St. Andrews area in Jackson County looked more like a river flowing this morning as Tropical Storm Cindy rained down. St. Andrews Road was impassible to drivers, but some local kids decided to turn a rainy situation into a fun one.
Barricades stand at the entrance of St. Andrews subdivision, warning drivers away from the flooded streets in this Jackson County neighborhood after steady rainfall overnight. St. Andrew’s Resident Bob Finn said, “We’ve been keeping an eye on it because it’s flooded before and when I went to bed last night it wasn’t. When I got up this morning, it certainly was.”
Maci Dennison and Kylie Broussard found an alternative way to travel down the water covered streets, taking a magic water ride on a unicorn that can also float. “We walked out and we wanted to go play in it. We expected to go swimming this summer, but not like this,” said Maci.
The water was thigh high in some spots and just feet from creeping into some homes perched on St. Andrews Drive. The two young playmates were in no serious danger, thanks to an attentive watchdog standing guard at the water’s edge. That is, until he decided to prove no flooded street is wide enough to keep him from getting to the ones he loves. He doggy paddled his way to his owner who had launched out on a watery adventure of his own, seeking out neighbors’ driveways as channel markers, refusing to let anything rain on his parade, as he joined the girls and others making the most of the watery playground. St. Andrews Resident Zac Millwood said, “Taking an opportunity of what we have out here. This is not usual.”
While residents made the most of this wet situation, homeowners, like Bob Finn, are flooded with concern any time there’s heavy rainfall in the area. “It’s always in the back of your mind. I guess, I’m looking out the window and walking the driveway a lot just to see if it is rising.”
But the homes are safe from flooding, at least this time around, as the remnants of Cindy continue to move further north. While Cindy has already pushed through South Mississippi, these residents will surely reflect on these water wonderland memories for years to come.
