Major road projects in South Mississippi inch closer to completion

It seems like at every turn you take here on the Coast, there is some form of road work going on.

MDOT released one of its periodic updates on the biggest projects in the six southern counties.

From Highway 49 to Gulfport to a large stretch of I-10 and other state highways in our local footprint, progress continues on major road projects, and there is a light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to project completion.

Work on the big widening project on Highway 49 from O’Neal Road to School Road will wrap up later this year. Right now, workers are continuing drainage work and finishing up the widening work in the southbound lanes.

Work on what MDOT calls a continuous flow intersection at the corner of 49 and Highway 53 also continues at a steady pace.

Further south, work on the I-10 interstate widening project between Diamondhead and County Farm Road will continue for another year or so.

Right now, paving on the new east and westbound lanes is wrapping up as well as work on the new bridge decks on the widened Wolf River Bridge.

Work also continues near Diamondhead on the new noise barrier wall that is a part of this project.

Now to Jackson County, earlier this week, we told you about the next step of the Highway 57 expansion project near Vancleave with workers initiating a lane switch to start on the next phase of the project.

While work on this project will continue through this year and wrap up in 2027, all 13 new bridges as part of this project are nearly complete, while paving work and earthwork is still underway across the project’s footprint.

From Highway 57 to Highway 67 in northern Harrison County, MDOT is gearing up to make safety improvements along the corridor.

Specifically, more than 40 intersections on the highway will become restricted crossing U-Turns and a six-foot bike lane is in the works alongside the outer lanes of the highway in each direction.

Transportation leaders are hopeful this work will be done by spring 2028.
