Mainland Least Tern nesting sites facing challenges following flooding
Mainland Least Tern nesting sites along the Coast are facing major challenges following severe coastal flooding last week.
Audubon Delta is reporting several least tern nesting sites from Pass Christian to Biloxi saw significant losses due to flooding and storm surge.
Even with a decline in nest numbers and flood damage, there are still chicks hatching and running around at several sites.
While it’s currently uncertain if birds from failed sites will re-nest this late in the season, the Audubon Delta Stewardship Program remains committed to monitoring and protecting the shorebirds.
