Lyman Elementary School Evacuated
Lyman Elementary School was evacuated today over concerns of a nearby woods fire.
The Gulfport Fire Department responded to the scene around 9:00 this morning after the smell of smoke overcame the area. No fire was found in or around the school building. After the department searched the entire area, it was determined that the school was safe and the smoke was not a threat. The students then returned to class as usual.
Lieutenant Mike McKeown with Gulfport Fire Department said, “The school was evacuated, they had the children out front. Their concern was where the fire was actually at and was the fire threatening the school. So they took basic maneuvers to take care of that.”
Where the smoke came from has not been determined.
