Lt. Governor supports flying the state flag
As the City of Biloxi decides to either keep the state flag down at City Hall or raise it up again, state leaders are weighing in on the controversial issue.
In late April, Biloxi Mayor Andrew ‘FoFo’ Gilich ordered all state flags bearing the Confederate battle emblem come down from all city buildings. Some have praised his actions while others decided to protest outside of City Hall with the state flag in hand.
News 25 caught up with Lt. Governor Tate Reeves who says he feels the mayor’s decision to remove the flag was a bizarre one. “I ran for lieutenant governor for the state of Mississippi. I didn’t run for mayor of Biloxi or the mayor of any other town. That’s the decision they have to make internally. It is our state flag. It is a flag that’s been confirmed by the vast majority of voters across our state in 2001. I don’t think their opinions have changed. It ought to be a decision made by the people of our state, not by any elected officials.”
During Tuesday night’s meeting, Councilman Robert Deming proposed a motion to require the state flag to fly at city buildings and reverse Mayor Gilich’s order to take the flag down.
They will vote on the issue during the next meeting.
