Long Beach, West Harrison earn top spots in state accreditation rankings

State district and school grades were released by the state Department of Education on Tuesday and Coast schools were right there at the top.

The Long Beach School District was named the top district in the state for the 2021-2022 school year.

Ocean Springs came in at No. 3, and Pass Christian at No. 9.

Nine other districts in South Mississippi earned an A rating on the state accountability scale:

  • Biloxi (12)
  • Harrison County (14)
  • Jackson County (15)
  • Stone County (17)
  • Bay-Waveland (19)
  • Poplarville (32)
  • Gulfport (33)
  • George County (37)
  • Pascagoula-Gautier (38)

The rankings were the first since 2019 that the districts have received new grades from the state because of the pandemic.

Hancock and Pearl River County districts both received B ratings.

Individually, West Harrison High School was ranked the top school in the state, followed by Ocean Springs at No. 2 and Long Beach at No. 5

Other high schools earning an A and their state ranking are:

  • D’Iberville (10)
  • Pass Christian (11)
  • St. Martin (12)
  • Pascagoula (17)
  • Hancock (20)
  • Gulfport (24)
  • Bay High (25)
  • George County (29)

The state Department of Education notes many districts saw an improvement since the pandemic.
