Long Beach School District offering new Pre-K program

Four-year-olds are now going to school in the Long Beach School District. Quarles and Reeves Elementary schools have started a new pre-k program.

Before this school year, kids began their educational journey in the district at age five. The goal of this program is to prepare children for kindergarten with an emphasis on teaching the alphabet and numbers and having them read and do simple math by the end of the school year.

With the program starting just this year, Quarles Elementary has two rooms filled with 20 children.

Pre-K Teacher Jessica McDaniel says the parents’ support has been incredible and the morning drop off was better than she expected. “It’s been great. We had some tears and some separation anxiety first thing in the morning, but some hugs and breakfast helped that a lot. Everyone is really excited to have the opportunity to send their kinds into the public school for preschool.”

With more kids joining the list for next year, the Long Beach School District plans to expand with more classrooms next year.
