Long Beach Public Library ‘Libraries Rock’ program

School’s out, but the Long Beach Public Library encourages children to learn and be creative with their Libraries Rock program.

The library combines music and reading activities to keep students reading over the summer. This summer program makes sure kids won’t hit another brick in the wall when they get back to school.

Kids in fourth through seventh grade participated in coming up with their own lyrics and poetry made out of magazine clippings and books off the shelves.

Even if they don’t love rock and roll, Children’s Librarian Renee Rayburn loves to see children picking up books in the summertime. “One of the things I know, I remember as a child was two days into the summer or a week into the summer. My mother hated hearing ‘I’m bored. I’m so bored.’ This summer reading program is a way for the parents to have something for their children to do.”

The library will have their Rock Party next week for children who completed their summer reading record over the past few months.
