Long Beach Police and Fire conduct active shooter training drills for school district
Long Beach police and fire departments teamed up this week with the school district to conduct active shooter training drills.
The departments partnered with the Long Beach School District to focus on emergency response to an on-campus active shooter incident.
Morning classroom training was followed by active shooter scenarios at Harper McCaughan Elementary, headed by Police Captain Patrick Craig.
The drills simulated how law enforcement and first responders would respond to secure a school campus should the need arise.
Long Beach Superintendent Dr. Talia Lock stressed the importance of staying alert. “In all the things that have happened around the country, all the shootings, I mean, I think the thing that all of the educators get out of that is, no one really is safe anymore. Pretty much, you have to be on guard at all times and just consistently make your processes better, consistently see where your weaknesses are and make those better and always be on guard and consistently have that constant communication with our police department and fire.”
Next week, Long Beach police will partner with the school district on training for the staff on their roles if an incident occurs and how to identify signs that could affect the safety of students.
