Long Beach Mayor Skellie’s Farewell Breakfast

Earlier this morning, USM Gulf Park held Long Beach’s Breakfast with the Mayor event, but this one was very meaningful for Mayor Billy Skellie.
After serving 13 years as Long Beach’s mayor along with other city positions, Mayor Skellie announced he is relieving his duties as mayor this June.
During his last Breakfast with the Mayor, he gave an update on the City of Long Beach. Since November 2015, the city has seen 70 new constructions, four commercial buildings, and 14 new businesses.
Mayor Skellie tells News 25, although the city has seen success in the past few years, the worst memory was of course Hurricane Katrina. “Certainly was the largest challenge and also some of the greatest opportunity. It was kind of a double edged sword if you took advantage of it and worked and I think we did and we’ve made a lot of progress.”
First responders with the Long Beach police and fire departments were also honored for their accomplishments at the breakfast, as well as citizen and educator of the year.
