Lola and Friends Bunny Rescue of South MS provides second chances to stray rabbits

When you think of adopting a pet, you probably think of dogs or cats from your local humane society.

But at Lola and Friends Bunny Rescue of South Mississippi, the goal is to make sure that some other furry friends find their forever homes.

Lola and Friends rescues bunnies from all along the Gulf Coast, from Mobile to New Orleans. Many of them have been dumped and left to fend for themselves, and as owner James Johnson explains, they often suffer when left in the wild.

“It’s a totally different type of animal,” Johnson said. “They can’t survive, they starve, everything’s out to get them. They last a week to a couple months and then they die, and they die a horrible death. Even if nothing gets them, they starve to death, which is a horrible way to go for anybody, animal or person.”

The organization rehabilitates these bunnies so that they can be adopted. This includes spaying or neutering the rabbits, handling medical needs, and even spending one on one time with each bunny to make sure they can bond with each other and humans.

“They’re companions, they stay out of trouble a little bit more,” owner Sherri Johnson explained. “They’re constantly grooming and loving on each other, and it helps when they have a bun-mate.”

As many families who already own bunnies look to travel for the holidays, Sherri reminds everyone that Lola and Friends has a safe space to board these pets so that they receive the best care.

“Sometimes the bunny might get a little upset that they’re not with their family or whatever, and you don’t want them to go into GI stasis, so we know what to look for,” Sherri said. “When you board them in a bunny place, it’s much better than boarding them when there’s dogs and cats around because they get scared.”
