Local woman helps tell your story through crafting pocket books
Everybody has a story to tell and with over 7 billion people walking the earth, only a few get told.
Right now, we get a glimpse into the mind of Michelle Thompson and the world of Chunk Me Story Telling Pocket Books.
“I learned or I found a way to turn my storm into a story, and when I did that, I said hmm. you know what I think what I’ll do is start making pocket books.”
For the last five years, Michelle Thompson has been helping people tell their stories through her pocket books. “I think I kind of turn into a counselor for probably about a good hour. People sit down and tell their story; they get very passionate. It’s almost like relief, being able to tell your story.”
There’s no pocket book without the interview process. “I have a list of questions, some of them consist of like, if they have any children, their hobbies, what they do for a living, maybe things that they’ve overcome, breast cancer, things of that nature”
Next is the gathering. “They tell me their story, and then what I do is go out and find those pieces, pieces that relate to their story.”
And then the magic happens. “I put them all together, I sit there and stare at it. I stare at it until it all comes together. I just keep playing with the puzzle and then there’s the story.”
And now, Michelle shows us how to read a pocket book. “This is the first purse I made. And it tells a story about me. I’ll give you a rundown really quick. It’s old guys, it’s over 5 years old. My name is Michelle Armetrius Thompson, that’s the MAT. I’m originally from Texas. So, I put the cow with the horns. I love to travel so I put the plane. I make my own lipstick. I am the key to my own success. I have an owl on the side for wisdom.”
Michelle shares with us the inspiration behind her brand. “In my life, I’m a single mother. 4 children, and it wasn’t easy, and I had a lot of things thrown at me, piled up on me, chunked on me, just constantly, and I found a way to make my negative a positive. So instead of calling it piled up on me, I called it chunk me, and I made my storm a beautiful story.”
Since creating her pocket books, Chunk Me has catered to organizations dealing with domestic violence, cancer research, and more.
