Local woman celebrates 92nd birthday in Gulfport

It’s a special day for a special lady. Today, Mrs. Ethel Mae Goff celebrated her 92nd birthday.

It was a celebration for the books as Mrs. Ethel Mae Goff enjoyed friends and family at her 92nd birthday party. “So happy to see what my family did and what you all did for me.”

The celebration kicked off with a parade of loved ones led by Gulfport’s police and fire departments. Great Grandson Terrius Smith said, “At first it was kind of weird that we didn’t really get to throw a party or anything, but this was the best idea and this is what she wanted. So, we always try and give her what she wants. It’s exciting seeing what she wants and seeing her reaction after its done.”

Terrius says Mrs. Ethel’s been practicing social distancing since the pandemic hit, but getting to celebrate this occasion reminds him of old times. “She used to have a chair over there that she wouldn’t let us pass. If we wanted to see her, we would have to wave or speak. She wouldn’t let us come in the house or on the porch. So, doing this, it was kind of like we can have the family back together like we always do.”

Smith says his great grandmother has been a huge influence in his life and he’s so excited to help her celebrate this milestone. “She instilled a lot of stuff in me. I’m in college and I go to Alcorn and I’m in the band so I had to go through the process of learning how to be under somebody, being a freshman, learning new stuff, and she taught me how to be strong. Like don’t care what nobody thinks or nobody says. My whole family is pretty much like that, but she is the epitome of that.”

“I’m just blessed to be here.”
