Local Teacher Awarded with State Honor

A long-time substitute teacher from Harrison County says she has never won anything in her life until today.
Callie Weaver is the Honorary Kelly Education Staffing Substitute Teacher of the Year. The Gulfport sub was surprised with the award at Bel Aire Elementary School this afternoon.
Mississippi’s Kelly Services asked 11 school districts to nominate an outstanding sub. Weaver won for Gulfport and then went on to win the state honor, as well.
Weaver tells News 25 she has been subbing for teachers in Harrison County for 30 years. When the award presenter asked the crowd of kids if she was the best, a sea of hands went up. “I just have a grandmother way with them, I guess. They just cling to me. I can go down the hall and it looks like Velcro, you know. Where they stick with you all the time! I can go out in public and my one son says to me, ‘mom, this is ridiculous. You can’t go anywhere without all these kids stuck to you.” I said, ‘I think it’s fantastic,’” said Weaver.
Weaver says she was completely surprised the entire elementary school kept the honor a secret until the ceremony.
