Local students deliver Valentine’s gifts to senior citizens

Health Science students at the Harrison County Career and Technical Center made seniors at Summerfield Senior Living in Gulfport feel special by delivering Valentine’s treats.

Students collected and stuffed 100 goody bags with candy, stuffed animals, socks, and word puzzles to deliver to seniors who might otherwise be overlooked during Valentine’s Day. Student Makayla Nelson said, “We are just really trying to show them that they are loved, even if they don’t have family down here or whatever the case may be. We are here for them and the health care community is here for them.”

The residents were surprised with all of the love and gifts. Resident Kay Henningsen says it filled her heart to know someone was thinking of her on this special day. “It is kind of a special time and it is nice not to feel forgotten.”

This tradition was started last year through the Adopt-A-Grandparent program. Students come here every other Monday to participate in clinicals and hone in on their nursing skills. Health Science Instructor Kaitlyn Derouen said, “We just wanted to make a bunch of bags and bring some smiles and joy to the residents that have kind of helped my students this year kind of gain some knowledge in health care.”

Student Olivia Ramirez says being able to give back to people who have paved the way for them is what it is all about. “We wanted to give back to our community because we know it is important. Just as much as they give to us and it is important to take care of your elders.”
