Local student wins Scholastic contest

One Harrison County student is spotlighted in a magazine known to children all across the country.

Van Perry is a fifth grader at Saucier Elementary School and submitted an entry for the ‘Word Nerd’ section of Scholastic’s ‘Storyworks’ magazine.

Perry’s entry was selected as the winning entry by Scholastic and he is now featured as the section’s real life ‘word nerd’ for the magazine’s February edition.

Perry read his winning entry for News 25 and shared his excitement on being named the contest winner. “It said ‘we consume scrumptious confections at the cinema.’ Being on ‘Storyworks’ is amazing!”

Van also enjoys using his love for words by writing for the school newspaper.
