Local Shelters Open Tonight
For people in the surrounding area affected by the severe weather, a shelter in Gulfport is open tonight.
The Red Cross says families were at the 361 shelter on County Farm Road this morning. Some were rescued after the severe flooding caused them to fend for their lives. One of the families tells News 25 their entire neighborhood was underwater.
Volunteers fed people and provided them with help. Gulfport resident Tara Lowrey tells News 25 she was on her way to work when her car was fully submerged under water. “The farther I went, before I knew it, it was deep. There was nothing I could do. It killed my car. The water was pushing my car the other way and had it not been for this guy in a white truck, I would have been in real trouble.”
The American Red Cross and Harrison County Emergency Management distributed tarps, cleanup kits and water. The Red Cross tells News 25 the 361 shelter on County Farm Road plans on staying open until tomorrow morning.
