Local organizations raising awareness for organ donations

Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency and Singing River Health System partnered to host a presentation to Jeune Esprit Service and Social Club on the importance of organ donations.

Currently, there are over 100,000 people on the waiting list for a life-saving transplant. One organ donor can save eight lives and can enhance the lives of 75 others through tissue donation.

MORA covered the need for organ, eye, and tissue donation and Singing River Health System presented the importance of being an organ and tissue donor.

The Jeune Esprit Service and Social Club painted rocks to raise awareness of organ and tissue donation and will place them in the local community.

They placed QR codes on the back of the rocks, linking to more information on how to donate. MORA Senior Community Coordinator Trisha Byrd said, “We like to reach out to the younger generation because a lot of time, donation is not discussed in families. So, we want to encourage the conversation.”

Jeune Esprit Service Coordinator Kennedy Williams said, “We just had our induction for our new members and this is our first service project of the year. We feel that it is really important to spread awareness for organ donation, especially among teenagers and young adults who don’t know a lot about it.”
