Local Man Protests House Bill 1523
If you were driving by Jones Park in Gulfport today, you may have seen a man holding up a sign that read “No hate. Go away, House Bill 1523.”
Kevin Ely has been a Gulfport resident for over 20 years. His recent visit to North Carolina has motivated him to take a stand against the bill, a bill he says is destroying jobs and families in North Carolina. He says he doesn’t want the same thing to happen in his community.
During his one man protest, Ely confronted people walking through Jones Park. Ely says he wants the governor to realize the bill is doing more wrong than right. “I want to try and make a difference. I want him to come down here and give everyone some answers on why he approved this bill and didn’t let the people vote. Basically, it’s a hate bill. It’s one-sided and that’s it.”
Ely tells News 25 he will protest the bill tomorrow again at 1 p.m. at Jones Park. He’s asking anyone who cares about the cause to join.
