Local law enforcement prepares for traffic influx

Black Beach Spring Break Weekend has returned to South Mississippi with a major influx in visitors anticipated.

Local law enforcement is offering safety and traffic tips to keep events running smoothly.

Black Beach Weekend kicks off Friday and local law enforcement is preparing for an increase in visitors and traffic, especially on Highway 90 where cones are separating the lanes.

However, Biloxi Police Captain Milton Houseman emphasizes that both lanes are open. “We put the cones out as a warning to drivers to get them to slow down. At this point in time that’s all they’re for. By no means are we changing the amount of lanes we’re using. It’s still normal flow. It will stay that way until traffic has come to a stop and we have to do something in order to have emergency vehicles able to run east and west. That will be the only time we go to one lane.”

BPD, Harrison County Sheriff’s Department, and the Gulfport Police Department are working together in an effort to make sure people stay safe as they enjoy themselves. “For this particular event especially be careful of pedestrians walking on the sidewalk, walking in the medians trying to cross Highway 90. If you’re driving on highway 90- heads up, pay attention because there is so much going on on both sides of the road.  You’re going to need to be really aware of your surroundings.”

Gulfport Police Sgt. Jason Ducre is reminding everyone to take your time and be patient if you plan on attending events this weekend. “You can expect an influx of traffic and visitors. We will have extra officers out patrolling the area. If you’re going out this weekend, make sure you plan ahead. Make sure you have an alternative route that you can take. If you’re not part of the event just avoid the area.”
