Local groups team up to feed health care workers on the Coast
Our hospitals across the Coast continue to work tirelessly to treat those with COVID-19 and those with other illnesses.
Today in Gulfport, three teams of people joined forces to make sure their heroic work is recognized.
We’ve seen stories of people coming together to feed citizens and law enforcement in this time of need, and now it’s time for healthcare heroes to enjoy a meal on behalf of a grateful city. Orange Grove Lion Club President Wesley Carter said, “We’re all about helping people, and this is what Garden Park is about, so we just thought we should show appreciation and provide dinners for them today and just came by to show our appreciation for all they do for the community.”
The Orange Grove Lions Club teamed up with Petie’s Eats and the Never Lose Sight organization to serve lunch to the emergency room staff at Garden Park Medical Center.
Putting together 50 lunches filled with sandwiches, fresh cookies, and chips is a tall task for anyone, but for the folks at Petie’s, it’s a no-brainer for those on the front lines. Petie’s Eats General Manager Rachel Hillman said, “They’re the ones who have to risk not only their health but their family’s health every day when they go home. And I know a lot of people are separated from their children that work in the healthcare industry and you know we should all keep them in our thoughts and prayers every day.”
Lions Club President Wesley Carter says the fact that civic groups are uniting for this common cause is a great sign. “It was even better because it was like a last minute thing, so we connected with them and they were on board, they thought our ideas were great and they wanted to do something as well, so it just came together. Couldn’t ask for a better situation. So, we did great.”
Each group is determined to continue serving as a point of light for the Coast as long as the need exists. “We’re always looking for ways to help the community, the owners here are excellent about giving back,” said Hillman.
Carter said, “Wherever there’s a need, there’s a lion. So, we commit to everything and everything we raise goes to the community.”
