Local educators react to potential pay raise
Good news for educators in the state of Mississippi as the Senate Education Committee kept the pay raise issue alive by amending House Bill 852.
It would give most teachers a $1,000 pay raise during the year that begins July 1st. Newer teachers would get $1,100.
Teacher shortages and low salaries are just some of the issues for Mississippi educators.
However, fifth grade math and science teacher at Crossroads Elementary Steven Howard tells News 25 the potential pay raise would continue to attract the right people to the profession to motivate students in the state. “Everybody has been affected by teachers in their lives and everybody has children in schools so everybody has an opinion about it. I believe a pay raise for teachers would be a great thing. We want to continue to attract people to the teaching profession and you want to keep good people in the teaching profession. That’s a primary way of doing that by giving everybody a raise.”
Howard mentions it takes more than just a raise to be in his line of work. It also takes passion about the betterment of young students to go on to do great things in life as well.
