Local educators attend GenSea program

High school educators will spend the next three days learning about the blue economy from GenSea.

GenSea is a program that collaborates with the University of Southern Mississippi and is led by STEM programs on the Coast to show high school students the bounty of marine careers on the Coast.

They host field trips, offer paid summer internships, and host workshops to show educators what is out there for their students which is what these teachers are doing this week.

They’ll learn everything from what kind of degree a student needs to how much those careers pay.

GenSea Program Manager Tara Skelton explains the purpose of the program. “The teachers are getting the word out across the state because Mississippi has a brain drain problem. We have the largest outward migration of college-educated young people in the whole country. And we want our smart kids to know they can stay at home and have smart jobs.”

These teachers are still enjoying their summer break because you can’t study the ocean without spending some time on the beach.
