Local comedians ‘Stand Up For Hunger’ with food drive

BILOXI, Miss. (WXXV) — Local comedians are lending a helping hand at Back Bay Mission in Biloxi, raising money and gathering food donations for those in need. This is part of their “Stand Up for Hunger” comedy event.

“The idea is bring some food and we’ll make you laugh,” said comedian Krangus Gillespie.

Local comedians Candy and Krangus are teaming up with Back Bay Mission to fight hunger on the Coast. They spent the day packing bags of food for those in need and have been collecting food and donations through their “Stand Up For Hunger” comedy shows.

“One day this place might be feeding me, so I’m paying it forward,” said Gillespie.

“I feel good about this,” said Candy. “I think this is what I was maybe called to do, personally.”.

Candy says this all started during the government shutdown.

“When the SNAP benefits began to halt, everybody was in kind of a panic about mass starvation. That didn’t sit right in my heart,” Candy said. “I felt it was important that we do something about it, especially as comedians where everybody is just one bad gig away from starvation.”

The pair, along with many other local comedians, have collected boxes filled with donations for those in need during the holiday season. Candy says this is something she hopes to expand on.

“I really hope to be able to continue this in the future just for different sectors of charity,” she said. “Maybe, one month do domestic violence, maybe a clothing drive, things like that.”

The last “Stand Up For Hunger” comedy show and food drive will be held on December 5 at 9 p.m. at the Juke Joint in Ocean Springs. Admission is just two non-perishable food items.

Other comedians scheduled to perform alongside Candy and Krangus are Terrance Washington, Luke Justice, 2Real, and special guest, Corey Mack.
