Local children read to therapy dogs through the ‘Sit, Stay, Read Literacy Program’

It was a dog-gone good time in Hancock County as young readers had the opportunity to improve their literacy skills.

Once a month, in collaboration with Visiting Pet Teams of South Mississippi, Hancock County Library System will continue hosting it’s ‘Sit, Stay, Read’ event once a month.

The dogs gave children their attention as kids took turns reading to their new four-legged friends while also giving them treats and much deserved belly scratches.

Leah Holmes, the branch manager of the Bay St. Louis Library, says it is a great way for young scholars to improve their reading skills. “This is a wonderful opportunity for little ones to come and practice their reading in a friendly environment with not a lot of stress, we’re gonna pet some dogs while we’re reading, the dogs love it, the kids love it.”

‘Sit, Stay, Read’ occurs on the first Thursday of every month at the Bay St. Louis Library.
