Local cheer gym responds to Nassar’s sentencing
Many athletes and coaches are feeling a sense of satisfaction after today’s sentencing that places former U.S Olympic Gymnastics team doctor, Larry Nassar, behind bars.
“I feel very comfortable with my coaches, very safe.” The over 150 girls that were sexually abused over the past two decades by Larry Nassar cannot share Payton Nichols opinion. Cheer Zone Athletics Coach Demickus Brothern said, “Honestly, I think it’s very disturbing. I don’t see how anyone can let themselves get to that point. I guess their main goal was bad from the start.”
The former U.S. Olympics gymnastics team doctor pled guilty to seven counts of criminal sexual conduct and admitted to using his trusted medical position to assault and molest girls. He will now be facing up to 175 years in federal prison.
Although Dr. Larry Nassar is finally paying the consequences for his action, many believe his sentence will never be enough to pay for what he did. “I feel like forever would be better, you know what I mean, because he damaged a lot of lives long term,” said Brothern.
Cheer Zone Coach Katlin Smith said, “These are their little children. To be able to trust them with their coaches is the most important thing so that trust right there has been broken and I don’t know if those kids will ever get that back.”
