Local artist named Mississippi 2021 Songwriter of the Year

It takes special talent to compete in any music competition on the Coast where local live music is the best kind of music.

This year, the 2021 Mississippi Songwriter of the Year goes to local artist Brandon Green.

Local dynamic singer/songwriter Brandon Green is the Mississippi 2021 Songwriter of the Year. Hailing from Lucedale, Green has been singing and performing since he was three-years-old. “I started singing in a choir at church, like a lot of folks do here in the South. I started playing gigs with me or my cousin or by myself.”

His unique southern country lyrics with Motown soul vocal influence has already received national attention. “I was on a show called ‘Can you Duet’ on CMT and then also did a few other things, songwriting wise with Guitar Center, winning a contest there called ‘Your Next Record with Keith Urban.”

Green missed the competition deadline last year, but this year he entered and landed the top spot. As the winner, Green gets to have a song of his choice professionally recorded and produced. “I was one of 15 finalists. Last weekend I went to Meridian, we all did our song live and they picked me as the winner.”

It was Green’s four-year-old son who broke the news to dad that he won the competition. “I was sitting there with my son. He was watching a Mickey Mouse video and they were calling out all the winners like the third, the second, and they said Brandon Green, and my son looked up and said ‘Dada, they said your name.’”

The winning song, Float, was inspired by what Green wished he was doing one day, reminiscing on his days on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. “My wife, she supports whatever I do. My kids, well one kid is only four months old, but my four-year-old, he loves everything that I do. So, I don’t really know if some of the songs he hears of mine are good or not because he likes them all.”

A music video will be created for the winning song Float by the communications department at Mississippi State.

Green currently lives in Gulfport and performs live across the Coast and neighboring states. His next performance is Friday at the Blind Tiger in Biloxi.
