Local African-Americans Making History

February 1st marked the beginning of Black History Month. News 25 caught up with Karen Sock, who made history right here along the Coast as the first African-American woman to run the daily operations of a casino.
Originally from Ohio, Sock moved to the Gulf Coast in 2005 and started her career in gaming at the original Harrah’s. She is now the president and CEO of her own consulting company called Sock Enterprises.
Sock has also made great strides in the non-profit sector. She’s the creator of the CEO Talent Show that has raised nearly $160,000 for United Way over the years, as well as Pathway 2 Possibilities, an interactive career expo designed for eighth graders. “As I think back about the importance of black history, which is an important part of American history and I think about how the people, so many people, men and women, have gone before me and opened the door so I can stand on their shoulders. The thing that’s important to me and most important to me is to make sure in my career that I help others,” said Sock.
The Gulf Coast MLK Committee recently award Sock with the Medallion of Service Award for all she does in the community.
