Listen! Ocean Springs’ Katelyn Perry captures preliminary talent competition at Miss Mississippi
Katelyn Perry of Ocean Springs said she knew when she heard Miss Virginia Caressa Cameron sing “Listen” from the Broadway show “Dreamgirls” that she would someday sing it on the pageant stage, too.
That happened Thursday night at the Miss Mississippi pageant. And just like the 2010 Miss America winner, she wowed the judges, winning the preliminary talent competition in Vicksburg with her rendition of the song sung by Beyonce in the movie version.
“It’s kinda been made famous in the pageant world by Caressa Cameron, who sang it in the Miss America,” said Perry, 23, who is Miss Pontotoc Ridge. “Ever since I watched her sing it, it’s been a song that I’ve absolutely loved. And when choosing a Miss Mississippi talent song, I’ve just had the most overwhelming feeling that this is what I should sing.
“So I chose it and I’ve been working really hard on it for two years, getting it ready for the Miss Mississippi stage. And I guess it paid off!”
Perry won a $500 cash scholarship for her talent win.
The pageant continues through Saturday, when a new Miss Mississippi will be crowned. The Saturday night show will be live-streamed at missmississippi.com.
