Let the good times roll safely this Mardi Gras season

JACKSON, MISS. – The good times are rolling in south Mississippi with Mardi Gras season in full swing! Amid the parades, king cakes, Mardi Gras balls and other festivities, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) wants to remind you of a few ways to keep your krewe safe this Carnival season.
Spend more time catching beads and less time in traffic with the MDOT Traffic mobile app, which shows real-time traffic conditions and road closures due to parades, road work, traffic accidents and more. Check the app before you go to navigate like a pro.
Remember, the true kings and queens of Mardi Gras are the designated drivers. Make a plan for a safe and sober ride home well before the grand marshals begin their march or the first bottle of champagne pops.
“We can all roll through Mardi Gras season safely with a little advance planning,” said Brad White, MDOT Executive Director. “Avoid tragedy in these festive times by always planning a sober ride home and remember to watch out for pedestrians, especially before, during and after parades.”
Here are some tips from MDOT to make sure everyone has a safe and enjoyable Mardi Gras season:
- If you drink, do not drive for any reason. Call a taxi, order a ride or find a sober driver.
- Slow down and watch out for pedestrians.
- Be mindful of road closures; never attempt to drive around barricades.
- Avoid all distractions and concentrate on the road.
- Be aware of all drivers on the road. Don’t assume everyone is as safe as you.
- Always wear your seatbelt. It is your greatest defense in a wreck.
- Don’t be afraid to stand up to someone trying to drive under the influence. Remove their keys to take away the temptation of wanting to drive.
- Impaired drivers are not only a danger to themselves, but also others on the road. If you suspect someone is driving impaired, call the police when it is safe to do so.
