Legislators & Educators Still Battle Over Common Core
State Senators, Michael Watson and Angela Hill, have co-written a bill to repeal Common Core state standards. Their bill calls for a complete overhaul of the standards by creating Mississippi’s own set of standards. Pascagoula Superintendent, Wayne Rodolfich, points out that Mississippi voluntarily adopted the Common Core standards and is afraid that jumping ship this early would waste millions of taxpayer dollars already spent, in addition to thousands of hours spent preparing for the implementation of Common Core standards.
Rodolfich says, “I think it’s economically irresponsible not to at least see where the strength and weaknesses are, and if there are legitimate concerns about Common Core, then let’s address those concerns, but let’s not annihilate three years of work that teachers and children have put in all for the sake of some political ideology.”
Since 2010, Mississippi has spent $694,000 on implementing Common Core standards.
