Legislators Become Principal for a Day
Some of our Coast legislators and Jackson County community leaders got an inside look at some Ocean Springs schools today.
By becoming principal for a day, these lawmakers are able to interact with the faculty, staff and the children, getting a behind the scenes look at the local education system. Representatives Hank Zuber and John Read, County Supervisor Troy Ross and many others participated this year.
Senator Brice Wiggins enjoyed learning about the day to day operations at Pecan Park Elementary School. He says having this experience will be extremely helpful when they go back to Jackson. “When we’re in Jackson, we only talk about data. We get to see that, but when we’re doing this we get to see what’s going on on the ground. It’s about the people. For so many times that gets lost up in Jackson. That’s what we need to keep in mind. While MAEP and other things like that are extremely important and necessary, we need to remember how it affects the teachers and the administrators on a daily basis.”
Legislators and county leaders take on the roles of Ocean Springs school principals once a year.
