Law Enforcement: No credible threats to local schools

A few South Mississippi schools are issuing statements regarding alleged social media threats.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has investigated recent social media threats in which Jackson County schools have been a target.  According to the sheriff’s office, currently the alleged threats have no merit and they are believed to have originated from outside the area.

The Pearl River County School District posted on social media that they were aware of a social media post on Snapchat concerning threats to the middle and high school.  Local law enforcement was contacted and have increased their presence on campus. According to the school district, no credible threat has been identified at this time.

Picayune School District also posted Thursday morning that a social media threat had been made to the junior high and the high school, but that no credible threat was found.

Picayune School District Police Chief Chris Wagner said this is the same threat that has been made to schools all over the area — and out of state. He said Homeland Security is involved in the investigation and there no credible threat has been found.

These two incidents come days after a similar threat was investigated at George County Middle School.

Anyone with any information pertaining to any threats to local school districts are asked to contact their local law enforcement.
