Law enforcement legend D’Wayne Swear dies
Retired NCIS agent D’Wayne Swear passed away this morning, leaving behind his family in Gulfport and a life-long career in local law enforcement.
News 25’s Gina Tomlinson sat down with one of his best friends at the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department who says Swear will be remembered as a legend.
The flag was lowered at the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, honoring a local law enforcement legend. Sixty-year-old retired NCIS Agent D’Wayne Swear of Gulfport passed away early Monday morning, days after being diagnosed with stage four cancer. Chief Investigator with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department Glenn Grannan met D’Wayne nearly forty years ago. “If you have the luxury of knowing D’Wayne, he’d change your life in a positive way. If you were fortunate enough to call you his friend, he’d change your life significantly. It was a significant event in your life.”
Working as an investigator for the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, D’Wayne was known for his dedication and his upbeat spirit evidenced by his playing Santa Claus for inmate’s children at Christmas time. “He never compromised his morals. What was right was right and what was wrong was wrong.”
D’Wayne was an NCIS agent from 1985 until 2010. D’Wayne investigated crimes that had to do with Navy or Marine Corp members. After retirement, D’Wayne got a phone call from a producer with TV show “NCIS: New Orleans” which eventually actually led to the foundation of the series main character Dwayne Pride.
The set of “NCIS: New Orleans’ closed for the day in honor of D’Wayne’s death. Grannan tells News 25 D’Wayne loved his wife and family in Gulfport and will go down as a legend to the law enforcement community. “He will be sorely missed by me and I’m sure a lot of others because he was an amazing friend to me.”
If you would like to pay your respects, his funeral services will be held at the Holy Rosary Church on Esplanade Avenue in New Orleans on Saturday, March 10th. Visitation times will start at 9 a.m. followed by mass at noon.
