Last Minute Effort to Repeal HB 1523

Some House members are working on a plan that seeks to overturn the passage of the Religious Accommodations Act.
Democrat Jay Hughes of Oxford has announced the introduction of the Mississippi Economic and Tourism Recovery Act. He’s calling this an opportunity to repeal House Bill 1523, saying it’s needed to correct the “negative consequences on Mississippi, its economic development, tourism industry and perception of residents.” It would require a suspension of rules and deadlines, a very rare occurrence in the Legislature. A two-thirds vote would be needed in both chambers, something that seems unlikely since 1523 passed 69-44 in the House and 32-17 in the Senate.
