La’Mello Parker’s family files wrongful death lawsuit

The family of a child killed by gunfire during a pursuit and shootout on Interstate 10 last year has filed a wrongful death lawsuit in Hinds County.

According to our media partner the Sun Herald, the family named the Department of Public Safety, Harrison County Sheriff Troy Peterson, two deputies, a Gulfport officer, and several unnamed MHP troopers.

In May 2021, three-month-old La’Mello Parker was killed during a police chase that ended in Harrison County on I-10.

Parker’s father, who had kidnapped the baby after killing the mother and her nephew near Baton Rouge, was chased across state lines.

When Eric Smith was forced off the road, he was fired on more than 20 times and died.

La’Mello, who was still in the vehicle, was also killed.

A Harrison County grand jury in April cleared law enforcement of any wrongdoing.
