Lake Mars Boat Ramp Gets Needed Repairs

Soon, residents of Jackson County will have one of their beloved boat launch ramps back and ready for use. Over the years, the buildup of siltation has made the Lake Mars boat ramps unusable.

Right now, the jetties are being built up higher by four or five feet and a new bulkhead is being constructed to stop the waves from washing in silt. After those two things are constructed, they will dredge out the silt, which is currently lodging up the ramps. Experts say these modifications should last and allow the ramp to be usable for years and years to come.

John McKay, Jackson County Supervisor for District 5, says, “And it’ll be ready to go because it’s just a short hop, a five minute hop from here out to Horn Island, which makes this such a popular boat launch ramp right here because it is so close to Horn Island where people like to go.”

The Lake Mars boat ramps should be ready for use by the end of January.
