Lady Greyhounds softball team hosts “Teal Night” fundraiser
Tonight the Ocean Springs softball team was hosting D’Iberville in a pivotal Region 7 Class 6A matchup, but the game itself was about something way bigger than a final score.
It was “Teal Night” at the home of the Lady Greyhounds who put on a fundraiser for Mississippi State freshman softball player Alex Wilcox. The Alabama native has been fighting ovarian cancer since her junior year of high school which prompted Ocean Springs to partner up with the Lady Warriors as well as Harrison Central and Biloxi to raise money for the Wilcox family and their medical bills.
Although Wilcox fell ill due to earlier treatments, her former club team coach Jay Roberson came out to support in her place. “We’re just trying to raise money to help the family with travel costs because they miss a lot of work with treatments, there’s co-pays. They also have another daughter that plays club ball who travels all over the country. So, financially it’s been a little bit of a burden on them. So, we’re just trying to do anything we can to help. A lot of local businesses donated stuff for us to raffle off. Hibbett Sports donated sports equipment for us to raffle off. Some of the casinos offered up spa days and dinners and things like that.”
Wilcox is currently going through her fourth round of treatment and family and friends are hopeful that that this will be her last round so she can get back to the diamond.
As for the game, Ocean Springs won 9-2.
