Ladies of Slavonian Lodge continue Christmas tradition of making pusharatas for a good cause

The Slavonian Ladies Auxiliary is hard at work spending hours preparing pusharatas for a good cause.

What started off as a small bake sale in the 80s has turned into a tradition here along the Coast. The sweet fried pastry is a Croatian tradition that is only prepared for weddings and Christmas.

The ladies took preorders and have a waiting list. They will spend more than 12 hours preparing more than 1,200 pusharatas.

The annual sale helps raise money for scholarships and local charities. Secretary Deborah Stanovich said, “It’s like a little donut. It has nuts and raisins, flour, fruit, lots of fruit in it. It’s very good. It’s just a little donut. It’s a Croatian filled fruit filled donut.”

Those lucky enough to have an order of pusharatas will be able to pick them up from the Slavonian Lodge tomorrow starting at 9 a.m.
