Labyrinth Made of Hurricane Katrina Debris on Display at Ohr O’Keefe Museum
A new exhibit at the Ohr O’Keefe Museum in Biloxi is allowing Coast residents to let go and move on.
“The Journey Within” is made up of debris from Hurricane Katrina. The artist and the museum have been urging Coast residents to drop off pieces of debris they’ve held onto for the past 10 years. The artwork features everything from broken porcelain to old tape cassettes dug up after Katrina. Under the debris are tiles taken from slabs along the Coast.
The artist, Elisha Dasilva, thought of the idea after studying labyrinths and their ability to help people heal after tragedy. “We have all these little pieces of debris,” said Desilva, “It’s a broken vase or whatever it is, but it just has that memory of it and we can’t let go of that. I just felt this was a good way to bring the community together to you know, one more time, bring it back. Let’s let go of those things that we held on it.”
The exhibit is supposed to last until August 29th, but the artist hopes to make it permanent.
