Labor Day BBQ and Campaign Rally
With primary elections over, candidates are now turning their attention towards Election Day on November 5th.
The Diamondhead Democratic Club hosted five candidates today at their annual Labor Day barbecue, allowing for residents to get familiar with the nominees.
For most, Labor Day is just a day off from work or school, but what’s the true meaning? DPIA Organizer Melissa Reed Graves said, “Labor Day is traditionally a day for the Democrats to celebrate the labor movement, the AFLCIO, etc.”
For the fourth year in a row, ‘the Diamondhead Democrats, Progressives, and Independence Alliance,’ or DPIA, hosted their Labor Day Barbecue and Campaign Rally. “We do a lot of voter education. We do a lot of nonpartisan voter education because we really care about the community of Diamondhead.”
The annual barbecue adds a less serious tone to campaigning, allowing for Democratic candidates to sit down and communicate with people who just want to share a bite to eat. Candidate Rickey Cole said, “You know, the good Lord gave us two ears and only one mouth so that means we should listen at least twice as much as we talk. I think you can’t really get a feel for what people want without interacting with them directly.”
The consistent topic among all of the candidates was voting. Former Hattiesburg Mayor and Secretary of State Candidate Johnny Dupree spoke at length about the topic and its value to not only our state, but the country as a whole. “It almost doesn’t matter who you go vote for as long as you vote. Then the true will of the people will become forward.”
Dupree and the other candidates will spend the next two months campaigning ahead of the November 5th Election Day.
