Kindergarten Round Up

The final days of summer are nearing. Kids, parents, and teachers are all gearing up to head back into the classrooms. News 25’s Caroline Eaker headed to Harrison Central Elementary School to catch up with some excited students taking part in the Kindergarten Round Up program.
The first day of school can be an intimidating experience for youngsters, but Harrison County Elementary School has found one way to help put these little ones at ease. Kindergarten teacher Denise Fountain said, “Today, we are having our Kindergarten Round Up. That gives the children an opportunity to see what they are actually going to do when they come to kindergarten.”
The fifth annual Kindergarten Round Up gives students a chance to come to school and figure out what it is going to be like before the school year starts.
Making new friends is only half of the excitement for these kids as they head into a new chapter in their life. Although, they’re all entering the same grade, each student is looking forward to a different lesson.
Kindergarten teacher Denise Fountain stresses the importance of making sure that kids have a chance like this one to get comfortable in the school and with the people that they will be spending the next year of their lives with. “It makes them a lot more comfortable. They know us so they come to a friendly, familiar face and it is not such a shock to them on their first day of school. We get to play with them and interact with them and it forms that bond that we need and it helps them for the rest of the year.”
The round up is a proven program that’s a winning hand for both the teachers and the students they’ll mentor and guide throughout the school year.
