Kevin Atlas speaks to students at Bay High School

This morning, students at Bay High School head from a special guest speaker.

Kevin Atlas shared his experience and struggles becoming the first player with only one hand to earn a Division I basketball scholarship.

Due to complications at birth, Atlas was born with a left arm that ended just below the elbow.

As a child, Kevin struggled in school and with self-confidence until a middle school coach showed that he believed in him.

From that moment on, Kevin dedicated himself to school and basketball and eventually became the first player with one hand to earn a Division I basketball scholarship at Manhattan College in New York. Atlas also played professionally overseas. Andrew Bush with Varsity Bands said, “We are simply here today to try to inspire these kids, uplift them in a way because they are our future. We want to make sure that they are prepared and ready for whatever obstacle comes their way that they can overcome that adversity and realize their dreams.”

In 2019, Atlas teamed up with Varsity Brands, whose mission is to elevate student experiences through sport, spirit, and achievement on a 200 stop nationwide speaking tour.

Atlas is challenging students to support one another through a campaign called the #believeinyou challenge.
