Kemper Power Plant Increase

Mississippi Power Company says it will spend another $142 million on its Kemper County power plant, pushing its total cost above $6.6 billion.
While the unit of Atlanta-based Southern Company will absorb $110 million of the cost, customers could be asked to pay for $32 million. The utility is absorbing $2.4 billion in overruns. Southern Company will write off $173 million before taxes from its quarterly earnings, which will be announced Wednesday.
Mississippi Power says it’s pushing back the plant’s projected completion date by two months to August 31st, saying it needs to reline pipes that control gas heated to 1,800 degrees. That gas, extracted from ground-up lignite coal at intense heat and pressure, is supposed to power the plant. Right now, it’s running on piped-in natural gas.
