Kelton Thompson awaiting board decision
During the final four games of the high school basketball season, the Picayune boys played without head coach Kelton Thompson. There were a lot of questions regarding his mysterious absence, but school officials haven’t been allowed to go on record about personnel decisions.
While that’s still the case, Thompson tells News 25 that he’s filed for a public appeals hearing, set for 9 a.m. tomorrow with the Picayune school board.
Thompson says he was removed from the team last month, but was never taken off the payroll. He chose a public hearing over an executive session to fight his termination with hopes of being retained as the boys head basketball coach at the end of this process.
School officials maintain their stance that they cannot comment on personnel decisions.
On February 7th, Thompson confirmed with News 25 that he was no longer with the team. He had five days to file that appeal, which will be held a month to the day of his termination.
During the four games Thompson missed, the Maroon Tide went 2-2 including a first-round playoff exit for the second straight year.
Overall, Thompson has led Picayune to a mark of 41-19 during his two years at the helm.
