Keesler Air Force Base Ten Years After Hurricane Katrina
It was almost ten years ago when Keesler Air Force Base was 75 percent submerged under water in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
Retired Major General Paul Capasso became commander of Keesler Air Force Base just a few months before Katrina caused a staggering 950 million dollars in damages to the base. Today, he was at the Ohr O’Keefe Museum in Biloxi telling the story of ‘Operation Dragon Comeback’, where Keesler leaders and airmen continued on their mission, rebuilding, renewing their commitment and reloading the military with well-trained airmen.
Major General Paul Capasso, retired commander of the 81st Training Wing, said, “When I look back over the past ten years and I look at Keesler Air Force Base and the Mississippi Gulf Coast, there has been a tremendous improvement in both locations. I’ve had the opportunity to come back several times over the last ten years and I applaud the efforts of the whole community because every time I come here, you can see major differences.”
In 2013, Keesler was named best base in the Air Force.
