Keeping pets safe in case of a fire
Are you an animal lover and want to ensure your pet is safe? We have some tips on how to keep your furry friend safe in case of a fire.
The number one thing in any type of fire safety is early warning. Smoke detectors are life-saving for people and pets. The earlier the station has a warning of the fire, the more time you and your pet have to evacuate.
It is important to make sure your pet has a collar so it can be identified if it escapes on its own.
It is very beneficial to have your pet somewhere close to the door, especially if you are not home. The location of the pet is very important when trying to rescue it. Harrison County Fire Chief Pat Sullivan said, “One thing that we have found is a lot of time a pet will go to the, underneath the furniture, they go underneath the bed, especially cats, we have a hard time finding them because they try to hide. So, we put them in an area that you don’t have a lot of clutter in a lot of places, that the firefighters could find them quickly is another thing we recommend.”
If the house is on fire, please do not go back inside to rescue your pet. Let them know they are inside when you call the fire department and they will try their best to help you.
